Spring is finally here in Hamilton and it’s about time to turn off that furnace, here’s some tips on the best way to do that. First make sure to set your thermostat to cool so it now controls your AC, rather than furnace and if your furnace is gas make sure you torn off the gas intake is off on the unit.

Although turning off your furnace is the most important task of course, you should also make sure you take steps to protect it throughout the summer season.

Make sure the area around your furnace is always clean and clear a good idea is to plan for three feet of space in all directions and don’t store items in a position where they could easily fall and cause damage.

It’s easy to forget about changing your HVAC filter this during the summer months but it’s still used to filter the air before it travels through your home’s ductwork.

Don’t put off problems. It’s easy to put things off to the colder weather but that may cause you more trouble over time. Especially since you already have to pay money to keep your AC running efficiently.

If your furnace isn’t operating efficiently, have it checked.

If you smell gas, have it checked.

If it’s making strange sounds, have it checked.

Home ownership has your mind turning to mundane things that you would rather not think about. One of those things is your water heater.

Here are the warning signs that a new water heater should be in your thoughts:

           · Water is dirty, has a rusty appearance

           · Water won’t become hot

           · Hot water tank is leaking

           · Hot water tank is repaired a lot

           · It’s making strange noises

These are the signs that it may time for a new water heater, however there is the mindset to just replace it before it fails totally. The knowledgeable team at A Rescue Rooter Plumbers will offer their advice about what you should do if you have any or all of these signs.

If your water is over 10 or 15 years old, it may be showing signs of age which are basically the warning signs that are listed above. You really don’t want a water heater that is temperantal and showing signs of failing. If it fails totally, you could be looking at the quick decision of a replacement. A Rescue Rooter Plumbers will of course do any necessary repairs and will install a new one if that is the course of action to be taken. If you’re thinking of replacing the tank before the worst happens, perhaps have the discussion about going with a tankless water heater. The experts at A Rescue Rooter will help you with that decision. While thinking about replacing your water heater, think about how if you replace it now, you won’t have the surprise of a cold shower, the awful discovery of water that has leaked from the water heater. Also, as the water heater begins to age and fail frequently, it uses more energy. If you replace it sooner rather than later, you will save money in the long run.

More than likely, you’re not plumbing expert, so there is a good chance you’ve got questions.

No matter what your plumbing issue is, A Rescue Rooter Plumbing can help you. The most asked questions are noted here.

How can I avoid water damage?

You can do this by regularly checking the tiles that surround your bathtub and shower for cracks and damage. While you’re at it, have a look at the grout. If you have discovered something amiss, water may have seeped in behind the tiles and caused damage to the wall. If any caulking is in disrepair, fix it or replace it. You don’t want water to seep through. The general rule of thumb is to try your best to keep the bathroom dry so that water can’t travel where it doesn’t belong. Wipe the floors dry and use the bathroom’s exhaust fan after use. Make sure the faucets in the bathroom aren’t leaking and deal with any abnormalities with the toilet. If you hear the toilet tank running for no reason, there is probably a leak to be repaired. A call to A Rescue Rooter Plumbing is certainly in order when you suspect a leak so that you can avoid future water damage.

A pipe has burst! What do I do?

             Toilet is overflowing.

When you first notice the toilet overflowing. Lay towels down if there is water on the floor. Next, remove the lid from the toilet tank and set it aside. Call A Rescue Rooter right away to help you. Turn off the water supply to the toilet until the toilet is repaired.

             Clogged pipes.

There are quick fixes you can do. With a toilet, grab the plunger and plunge away. If it doesn’t resolve using a plunger, try a plumber’s snake. Your plumber can also help break the clog. If the kitchen sink gets clogged regularly, chances are cooking grease is being poured down the drain. Your best bet is to call a plumber to resolve the kitchen clog then make sure not to drain grease and use a trap-type plug on a regular basis. The bathtub and sinks may get clogged from hair. Use a trap and if it’s a clog you can’t resolve, reach out to your trusted plumber.

When you’re choosing the right plumber, the following should take place:

           · Ask for Referrals and take the time to read online reviews

           · Interview the company and/or the actual plumber

           · Get an estimate

           · Ask about their warranties and guarantees

           · Ask them for referrals if you’re hiring them for assistance in a remodel/renovation

           · Make sure they’re licensed and insured

Some plumbing repairs you can take care of on your own....some, you can't....

Some plumbing repairs you can take care of on your own. But some issues definitely need the help of a trained professional. A plumber will fix any issue, big or small, but some repairs you simply cannot do. An issue that should be handled by a trained, licensed professional, is a water heater that is acting up. If the water has turned cold in your house, a call to A Rescue Rooter will be in order. Their plumber will check that the pilot light is still lit and if it went out, they will re-light it. It could be a buildup of sediment or a faulty thermostat that is the culprit but a trained plumbing technician should make the diagnosis and fix the fault. Another common issue that warrants the help of a plumber is low water pressure. If the water is trickling out of your taps, a call to a plumber should be in order. This may be an issue in an older home because pipes could be worn, broken or corroded due to their age. Remember, nothing lasts forever!

The arrival of cooler weather means now is the time to get your furnace ready to keep you warm. There are things you can do to ensure that your furnace will run smooth when the time comes to turn it on. Your best bet, however, would be to call the professionals at A Rescue Rooter. A lot could’ve happened over the summer to your furnace while it wasn’t being used so an inspection should really be done by a professional at A Rescue Rooter.

There are a couple of little things you can take care of yourself. However, it’s a good idea that every three months change the furnace filter yourself. Some have suggested to have a look at it on a monthly basis and if it looks good, it doesn’t need to be changed. A good time to stock up on furnace filters is during the summer before there’s a run on them in the winter. Before you turn on the furnace, remove anything stored near the furnace. When you know for sure that you won’t use the air conditioner, it’s time to cover the outside unit and clear out any weeds and debris around it. It’s okay for you to turn on the thermostat if you like.

Getting Ready for Winter

Winter is coming. Is your plumbing and your HVAC system ready? There are few things you can do now before the temperatures drop and the snow flies. The experts at A Rescue Rooter Plumbing will assist you in taking care of your plumbing and HVAC needs this time of year.

You should check the insulation around pipes. Especially those that are on outside walls. Having to deal with frozen pipes would be awful. Perhaps have the professionals at A Rescue Rooter check your pipes inside and outside. This is also a good time to have your water heater checked.

There a couple of little things you can take care of yourself in your HVAC system. Check and change the filter in your furnace. Some have suggested to have a look at the filter on a monthly basis and if it looks good, it doesn’t need to be changed. The fall is a good time to stock up on furnace filters before there’s a run on them in the winter. Before you turn on the furnace, remove anything stored close by. When you know for sure that you won’t use the air conditioner, it’s time to cover the outside unit and clear out any weeds and debris around it.

The technician that does your furnace winter inspection should do a complete check of your HVAC system. This will include checking the vents, heat exchange, making sure the furnace ignites properly, making sure all moving parts work, checking the belts and more. The experts at A Rescue Rooter will make sure your HVAC system is prepared for winter. If you have an oil or gas furnace, there are few additional checks to be added to the list.

Make the time to have your HVAC system checked long before the furnace is turned on. A routine check and maintenance will take care of any small issues before they become large ones that are costly. Your A Rescue Rooter expert will identify and look after any issues and will sure your furnace will run efficiently and safely. A professional furnace inspection is very beneficial to your peace of mind and comfort.

How to Use Your Programmable Thermostat to Its Full Potential

The Best Way to Set Your Programmable Thermostat in Winter

Installing a programmable thermostat in your home can save you money on your energy bill without sacrificing your family's comfort.

Heating your home using a programmable thermostat allows you to adjust the times you turn on the heat according to a pre-set schedule. These thermostats can store and repeat multiple daily settings (six or more temperature settings a day) that you can manually override without affecting the rest of the daily or weekly program.

           GENERAL THERMOSTAT OPERATION

You can easily save energy in the winter by setting the thermostat to 68°F while you're awake and setting it lower while you're asleep or away from home. By turning your thermostat back 10° to 15° for 8 hours, you can save 5% to 15% a year on your heating bill -- a savings of as much as 1% for each degree if the setback period is eight hours long.

A common misconception associated with thermostats is that a furnace works harder than normal to warm the space back to a comfortable temperature after the thermostat has been set back, resulting in little or no savings.

In fact, as soon as your house drops below its normal temperature, it will lose energy to the surrounding environment more slowly. The lower the interior temperature, the slower the heat loss. So the longer your house remains at the lower temperature, the more energy you save, because your house has lost less energy than it would have at the higher temperature.

Programmable thermostats can trim about $180 a year from your energy bill by automatically reducing your heating when you need it least.

But do you know the best settings for winter?

Industry experts recommend the following temperatures when working away from home:

           6 a.m. to 9 a.m. 68 degrees

           9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. 60 degrees

           5:30 to 11 p.m. 68 degrees

           11 p.m. to 6 a.m. 60 degrees

The nighttime recommendation may seem a little chilly, but you can adjust according to what’s comfortable for you. However, research has shown that cooler temperatures ( mid-60s vs upper-60s/low-70s ) promote better sleep, and may even increase your metabolism.

If you are going to be away from home for a few days, they also recommend setting the thermostat to 55 degrees.

Benefits of Maintaining Your Heating System

Is It Time For A Fall Furnace Inspection From A Rescue Rooter?

It's the first day of Fall. Unfortunately, summer is officially over and it is time to think about your furnace inspection before the cold weather blows in. This is the perfect time to perform an annual furnace inspection to protect your family and your equipment in the coming months.

Maintaining your heating system will result in:

           •	Increased Efficiency

           •	Quieter Operation

           •	Fewer Opportunities for Breakdowns

            •	Greater Peace of Mind

Follow these steps to ensure your equipment is ready for winter:

Begin with your air filter; these filters can collect dust and debris quickly, so it is important to replace your air filters every month. This task is simple and easy to do and it is key to keep your furnace clear of debris and running properly.

It is also a smart idea to start your furnace early. You do not want to learn that your furnace is not working when you actually need it. Since it’s been warm outside the past few months, something might have malfunctioned with your furnace. If your furnace is 15 years or older, you may want to consider replacing it. Older furnaces may only use 60% of the available heat to warm your house. Newer ones are 94% efficient and can save you money on your energy bill each month.

Cleaning your air ducts and vents are another mindless task that can make all the difference in the air flow of your home. Clean the vents and ducts around your home by removing the vent covers and by using the extension hose of your vacuum cleaner, all the debris should vanish.

Keeping all vents around your home is important for air flow and cost efficiency. It does not save you money if you close air vents in a selected few rooms that you are not using, this just makes the other open air vents work harder to circulate and warm up the rooms that the vents are closed in. If your home has floor vents, make sure that nothing is covering or blocking that vent from getting the air out.

Check your outdoor exhaust flue to see if there is anything in the way. You may find an animal nest or plant covering it. Also, many people store summer items next to their furnace which can be a safety hazard. If you have anything flammable such as a lawnmower, weed-eaters, or gas cans surrounding your furnace, you should promptly move it away from your furnace before you begin to run it.

This may sound like a no-brainer but make sure that your thermostat is set to its heating mode. Your furnace will not activate if you set your thermostat above room temperature and it is still on air conditioning mode.

It is also be a good idea to have a professional Hamilton HVAC expert to come out and tune up or check your furnace. You may find that you need another furnace or your old one fixed. Maintaining your home's furnace helps extend the life or your equipment. So, perform a furnace check early, before it’s too late!

Is It Possible To Fight Allergies With Your HVAC System?

         Yes, And Here’s How….

Pollen allergies continue to get longer and more intense as temperatures rise. Rising average temperatures are leading to a longer ragweed pollen season in Hamilton.

Here are three ways you can use your home's heating & cooling system to ease allergy symptoms.

           1. Purchase High-Quality Filters

You can improve your home's air quality by using high quality air filters and changing them often. The MERV "Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value" rating tells you the size of the particles that can pass through the filter. The higher the rating means fewer particles can be passed into your home. Lower quality filters, in the 1-4 MERV range, are typically made of fiberglass. Most residential HVAC systems will use air filters with MERV ratings from 7-12. A higher MERV value of 5-16 would be recommended for commercial buildings. During allergy season, we recommend filters with a MERV rating of 8 as they are more useful when trying to trap smaller particles. It is important to change your air filters every 3 months and if you have pets, you should do it more often.

           2. Adjust Your Home's Humidity Level

Humidity levels that are too low or too high can often lead to problems. A humidity level that is too high can cause mold to grow. During the winter months, humidity levels drop because cold air holds less moisture than warm air. Low humidity causes static electricity, dry skin and hair, increased susceptibility to colds and respiratory illness, and can allow viruses and germs to thrive. By using a whole house humidifier, you can always be sure that the level of humidity in your home is just right!

Regardless of the age of your heating system or if you are currently using portable appliances, updating to whole-home solutions could save you a substantial amount on energy costs and address other issues affecting the air quality in your home.

Most people feel comfortable in their home when the relative humidity remains between 30 and 60 percent. When the indoor humidity level is below 30 percent, the air is too dry, which can harm both a home's structural integrity and your health.

           3. Schedule an HVAC Maintenance Appointment

Many homeowners aren't unaware that their HVAC system will be more efficient and perform better with regular maintenance. Regular maintenance can often reduce the number of allergens that enter your home. These appointments can also identify issues with your system before they become major problems. Many people don't realize that they can make adjustments to ensure that they have the highest quality air. Whole home air purification systems can improve the comfort of your home.

Does Your Air Conditioner Run Nonstop?

Well You Better Catch It, Before It Runs Away!

Does it seem as if your air conditioner is running all the time?

Under normal conditions you can expect your AC to run about 15 minutes per cycle on a hot summer day. Cycles that are 30 minutes or longer indicate there may be a problem with your system. Equipment that runs constantly not only wastes energy and drives up your energy bill, but will also cause the components of your system to wear out much quicker.

Here are 5 reasons your air conditioner runs constantly:

           1. Your unit is too small. If the air conditioner that you have is too small, it will run all the time because it isn't powerful enough to meet your home's cooling demands.

           2. Your air conditioner is too old. As air conditioners age, they lose their ability to properly cool your home. Various components can begin to become inefficient, and your air conditioner will have to run much more often than it used to in order to keep your home cool.

           3. Your system or your home has air leaks. Air leaks can develop around your windows and doors, as well as in your ductwork. These leaks allow conditioned air to escape your home, which means your AC has to keep producing more cold air and runs more often than it should.

           4. Your cooling coils need to be cleaned. When your cooling coils are dirty, your air conditioner has a much harder time removing heat from your home. It's very important to have them cleaned during an annual tune-up.

           5. Your thermostat is set incorrectly. Your AC can only handle a specific temperature difference between your home and outside. If it is set at 20 degrees and it's 35 degrees out, your air conditioner will have to run constantly to try and keep up.

How To Keep Your Home's Air Clean!

Opening your windows and letting in some fresh air is a good idea after a long winter. Dirty indoor air cleaner air is present even inside the cleanest homes. You may even be contributing to the problem and not even know it.

Cleaning products are some of the biggest contributors to toxic indoor air. Household cleaners are often made with chemicals that can release toxic fumes into the air in the form of VOCs (volatile organic compounds).

Your family can feel ill from these toxins. They can cause headaches, nausea, and other ailments. If you have small children or babies in your home you should be extra careful as they are even more susceptible to these chemicals. You should always clean with the windows open or use all natural products if the windows are closed.

Cooking is a major contributor to dirty indoor air. Using a range hood fan with the window cracked while you cook, can eliminate most of the harmful fumes from your kitchen and pull in fresh air.

You may decide you want to eliminate cooking odors or pet odors, but be careful how you do it. Many people don't realize that air fresheners and scented candles also contain harmful carcinogens. Get rid of odors by using homemade potpourri, natural, unscented candles or crack a window when you use candles to allow fresh air in and fumes out.

Removing dust, allergens and odors can make a huge difference in the health and the quality of your family's life. The EPA reports that indoor air quality can be 100 times worse than outside air. This is usually from airborne pollutants such as dust, pollen, dirt, mold spores and dander.

Today's homes are constructed tighter than ever trapping stale indoor air and pollutants. Proper filtration cleans the air in your entire home. A whole-home air purifier treats 100% of the air flowing through your system before it circulates, to remove bacteria, viruses, pollen and mold from the air.

Why Do Frozen Pipes of Water Burst / Crack?

There Could Be A Number Of Reasons….

Who wants to deal with the damages, expenses, and messes caused by burst pipes?

           No one.

So, what causes these pipes to burst during the winter? The basic answer is that the water coming into your house from the outside is much colder than it was during the summer months. The cold water causes your pipes to contract and in weaker parts, can cause the pipe to burst. This happens because the pipe becomes unable to withhold the water pressures inside it.

Typically, your home's pipes begin to freeze when the outside temperature is about-7 degrees Celsius, depending on your geographical location. For example, areas that expect lower temperatures have water pipes that are better insulated in inner parts of your home, compared to other areas.

How Long Does It Take For Pipes to Freeze and Burst?

The first thing to think about when answering this question is, what is the exact temperature outside and how long is it predicted to stay that temperature or lower? As a general rule of thumb, in order for your home's water pipes to freeze, the outside temperature needs to be below -7 degrees Celsius, for a total of at least six consecutive hours. How long it will take for your pipes to freeze and burst also depends on your home's insulation, and how deep inside your home your water pipes are located. For example, if you live in a geographical location that usually does not suffer from cold winters, chances are that your water pipes do not have that much insulation to protect them from extreme temperatures. In such cases, the time that it may take for your pipes to freeze and burst may in fact be lower.

Precautions You Can Take To Prevent Your Water Pipes Bursting:

There are no practical ways of heating the ground temperature around your home, so stopping the contraction caused by the cold water is not something you can control. Our advice is to be mindful of your plumbing system as the temperatures change and check to see if you have any leaks. While we can't stop the leaks caused by temperature drops, there are things you can do to prevent pipes from freezing and bursting. Here is a list of eight things that you can do to avoid water pipe bursts:

           1. Keep Water Faucets Running

If it is extremely cold outside, always keep one or two faucets running slowly. Water moving through the system should prevent the line from freezing.

           2. Direct Warm Air To Cold Areas Of Your Home

Often, the pipes that freeze are located near an outside wall or a window, so be sure to direct warm air to any colder areas of your home. (Start in your basement and look for any pipes near the exterior of the home).

           3. Leave Your Cabinet Doors Open

If your kitchen sink is on an outside wall (as it usually is), be sure to leave cabinet doors open to allow warm air into the cabinet. Your kitchen faucet is usually to leave on during extremely cold weather.

           4. Disconnect Your Hose From The Outside Faucet

Be sure to disconnect your hose from the outside faucet. If you leave your hose connected, water is not able to drain out of your hose bib and will freeze and break the device.

           5. Seal Leaks That Allow Cold Air Into Your Home

Seal leaks that allow cold air into your home where pipes are located. Look for air leaks around electrical wiring, dryer vents, and pipes. Use caulk or insulation to keep the cold out. With severe cold, even a tiny opening can let in enough cold air to cause a pipe to freeze.

Can Your Heating and Cooling System Help You Fight Allergies?

         Yes, And Here’s Why…

Although there are some areas in Southern Ontario where natural gas has not available for heating or cooking, that is drastically changing in many rural communities. This is good news for homeowners as a natural gas furnace is the most economical choice available right now.

Thanks to advances in technology, large supplies of domestic natural gas are increasing and projected to remain abundant for 100+ years.

Compared to oil, which is an imported commodity and shrinking in supply, North American natural gas supplies are keeping costs low.

While home heating oil is subject to daily price volatility, natural gas rates are set annually, and customers are now paying the lowest rates since 2004. Unlike oil delivery costs that are due when delivered, you pay for natural gas only when you use it.

Natural gas offers families comfort, convenience, and versatility.

           •	Comfort. A natural gas furnace provides a high temperature heat, like an oil furnace. But unlike an oil furnace which degrades in efficiency as soot builds up on heat transfer areas, a natural gas furnace maintains its efficiency, is easier to maintain and repair, and can last 20 years.

           •	Convenience. Because it’s piped directly to your home, natural gas is always there when you need it. No more wasting time to schedule oil deliveries, no more worries about flow problems, priming, sludge, or soot on your home’s walls, windows and draperies.

           •	Versatility. When you have a natural gas furnace in your home, you can add highly desirable appliances like a gas range, gas fireplace, gas tankless or tank water heater, gas dryer, or gas outdoor grill. A recent survey concluded that 75 percent of recent home buyers prefer cooking with natural gas. A gas range and other gas appliances are an investment that can pay additional dividends when it’s time to sell your home.

           •	Cleaner & Greener. Natural gas is cleaner, greener, and has a lower risk. Homes with natural gas heat produce an estimated 42 percent less greenhouse gases than oil-heated homes, up to 42 percent less carbon dioxide and up to 99.9 percent less sulfur dioxide.

           •	Lower Risk. How old is your underground oil tank? Many older homes with oil furnaces are fueled by an oil tank installed underground when the home was originally built. Over time these can degrade and potentially leak oil into the soil on your or your neighbor’s property. Heating with a natural gas furnace eliminates your risk of a leaking oil tank, a very expensive environmental headache and cleanup.

There’s never been a better time to make the switch. If your home does not already have natural gas, you will need to connect to the gas main. Typically, this involves burying a pipe from your house to the street. You may also need to run new piping inside your house. We do not recommend running natural gas through copper piping. If you currently have copper piping to run propane, you may need to swap out your copper piping

Converting your existing oil-burning furnace or boiler to natural gas is not cheap, but if you need to replace an older oil furnace anyway, natural gas can make sense. Check to see if your water heater currently burns fuel oil. If so, you will need to switch your water heater to natural gas. While this will increase your up-front costs, natural gas water heaters are much cheaper to buy than oil-fired water heaters.

With summer coming to an end and fall quickly approaching, there are a few things you should do to prepare for the upcoming Southern Ontario fall and winter and one of them is – checking your plumbing. Thankfully, these plumbing tips will help ensure your pipes stay flowing during the cold season.

Disconnect water hoses outside. Leaving the water hose connected means water will be left in the hose. And while this isn’t a problem during the summer, in the winter months the water freezes and expands, which can result in the connecting pipes and faucets located inside to freeze and crack. Of course, it probably will ruin your hose as well.

Add pipe insulation. Homeowners often forget about the pipes running through unheated areas, like crawl spaces and garages. Adding pipe insulation will help prevent these pipes from freezing during the winter. Protect outside faucets by covering them with an inexpensive Styrofoam insulation designed for faucets.

Remove leaves and other debris from the downspouts and gutters. This will help ensure the water drains freely during the winter months. If it doesn’t drain, damaging ice dams can form on your roof.

Seal leaks. Sealing air leaks around your windows and doors, and in other areas likely to experience leaks, will help keep heated airinside in the winter, and keep hot outside air from infiltrating in the summer. It also will keep dirty outside air from getting into your house.

Set your water heater’s temperature at 50 degrees Celsius. This keeps the water hot enough for showers, baths and other uses while still reducing energy costs.

Make sure to clean your sump pump and its pit. During cold weather, the pump can actually freeze and as a result not work properly.

Also, if you are going away for an extended time frame during the winter, remember to shut the main water valve off and allow the system to drain by opening faucets located at the lowest and highest points of your home.

Hot weather is here and many of our customers are havingissues with their Hamilton air conditioning equipment. Depending on the age andthe cost to repair an old air conditioning system, you may be thinking of an ACreplacement.

Do you know what size AC unit should you buy for your home?

Choosing the right size unit is very important. Many peoplethink that the bigger the unit the cooler their home will be. However, if anair conditioner that is too large is installed, thinking it will provide bettercooling, you could have a problem. Over-sized equipment is actually lesseffective and also wastes energy and money.

Air conditioners remove heat and humidity from the air. Ifthe unit is too large, it will cool the room quickly, but only remove some ofthe humidity. This leaves the room with a damp, clammy feeling. A properlysized unit will remove humidity effectively as it cools.

When the air passes over the evaporator coil which is verycold, the temperature drops. In Southern Ontario, where we have high relativehumidity levels, the evaporator coil doesn't just cool the air but also acts asa dehumidifier. This happens when the air hits the coil and the temperature ofthe coil is below the dew point of the air.

This causes water vapor to condense on the coil. With acooling unit that is too large, water vapor condenses on the coil, but youdon't get enough condensation on it for the water to start dripping down intothe pan below the coil. If this happens the water isn't drained to the outside. Then your home has a damp clammy feeling.

An AC that is too big can also be more expensive to buy andto operate. It will start and stop more often, thus shortening the lifespan ofthe equipment. When a cooling system is over sized, it starts up and shuts downa lot more because it runs for only a short time to meet the thermostat setpoint. All those starts and stops mean you'll probably be repairing it moreoften and replacing it sooner.

Myths can be fun, but not when they cost you money. Unfortunately, there are a lot of misconceptions floating around about plumbing in your Hamilton home, and they tend not to fall into that fun category. A Rescue Rooter wants to help you drown out the myths that could be damaging your Hamilton plumbing and costing you money.

Leaky faucets may not seem like *that* big a deal, right? Well… you’re kind of right. No, the leaky faucet won’t flood your home, but it will drain your wallet. Ignoring your leaky faucets comes down to just being wasteful. The average leak will waste over 10,000 gallons in a year, that’s equal to 270 loads of laundry. Fixing that leak, could save you nearly 10 per cent on your water bill!

Your garbage disposal can take a beating from simple wear and tear, so avoiding do-it-yourself myths can help extend its life just a little bit longer. We commonly hear customers say that they need new blades despite sharpening them. How did they try to sharpen the blades you ask? Ice cubes. Ice definitely won’t help you sharped up your blades, but it can help clean them. If you think you are in need of new blades, give A Rescue Rooter a call, we’re more than happy to replace them for you. If you notice a funky smell around your sink, go ahead and toss a few cubes in and let the disposal run. You should avoid putting lemons down the drain to help with the odour. The internet is convinced lemon peels will mask that yucky smell, but in reality, their scent fades quickly and they could clog up your drain.

Even with a garbage disposal, you should avoid dumping grease down your drains. Many customers we visit have the common misconception of running hot water down the drain after grease will prevent clogging. That isn’t quite the case. The hot water doesn’t do anything to break down the fat, meaning it’ll still clog your drain right up. Some homeowners have said they flush their grease to avoid clogging their sink. All that’ll get you is a plugged drain in your toilet. You should dispose of cooking fat in the trash where it won’t damage your home.

The bathroom tends to hold the most costly plumbing myths, especially your toilets. Keeping things that don’t belong in the toilet, out of the toilet may seem like common sense but there are many things you may think are safe, that aren’t. Some things that are labeled flushable, really aren’t! ‘Flushable’ wipes are one of the most common things Hamilton plumbers see clogging toilets. Yes, they will flush, but they don’t degrade like toilet paper and can lead to quite the drain issue. Paper towels and make-up wipes are common culprits also seen in toilets that lead to some not so great results. Making sure things that find a home in the bathroom but are clearly labeled do not flush, are disposed of properly can save you a lot of headaches, and money.

Sometimes even things that do belong in the toilet, aren’t as great for it as you might think. Bleach is the most used cleaning spray in Canada for household messes, but too much is never a good thing. A quick soak before scrubbing won’t ruin your bowl, or drain, but you should try and avoid the long-lasting bleach cleaner toilet snap-ons or tank tabs. Prolonged exposure to bleach can degrade the working parts of your toilet that will need a visit from a Hamilton plumber to fix.

A long time, and very incorrect, myth is that it can be hard to find a local residential or commercial plumber and that you can do it yourself to save money, but that isn’t the case. Going the DIY route can make the plumbing issue much larger than it ever needed to be. Sometimes what you think is just a little leak, or a simple clog is leading to a larger, underlying issue that a local Hamilton plumber will need to diagnose. Plumbing services in Hamilton are much more common, and readily available than you may know.

Whether it’s for Hamilton plumbing repairs or HVAC maintenance, our licensed technicians visit a lot of homes throughout the course of a day. One of the things that still surprises us is how many of our customers are performing their own kitchen or bath remodel.

We understand that labour for professional remodeling can be pricey and your time is precious, but it’s important to think about how plumbing will affect major areas like the bathroom and kitchen, I mean what’s the point in being aesthetically appealing if it’s not fully functional? Plumbing is the foundation—the central system—that all other components of the renovation are built around.

When undergoing a kitchen remodel, there are so many design choices –like countertops and flooring–and oftentimes homeowners get sucked into decisions on finishes and amenities rather than starting with basics like layout. The decision of where you want the sink, dishwasher and refrigerator all impact the configuration of the plumbing and should be finalized early on so at least you know the dimensions and lay of the land.

In the bathroom, every individual fixture—toilet, tub, shower, sink—relies on proper plumbing not only to perform optimally, but to be compatible with other fixtures when used simultaneously. This is true whether you’re redoing the entire bathroom or just swapping out some fixtures. Homeowners commonly think they can easily shift the toilet because toilets are lightweight and compact. However, even if you’re reusing installations and only moving the toilet a few inches, it’s considered a major plumbing change. You’ll soon realize it’s not the pipes in the wall but the hole underneath the commode that creates a challenge!

It’s possible you’ve looked into every potential challenge prior to starting your kitchen or bathroom remodel and remain confident in your abilities. While we applaud your efforts, some finishing touches are best left to a professional plumber, and here’s why…

            · When not installed or serviced properly, pipes, fixtures and appliances can unexpectedly create serious damage to your home’s plumbing system. The expertise of a plumber in relocating pipes, as well as installing fixtures and appliances, minimizes inconvenient downtime during the course of your remodel.

            · Projects that involve building permits are best handled by a professional plumber. In fact, many provinces have local codes that allow only a licensed contractor to perform certain work, and this includes moving or expanding the plumbing system.

If you plan out your remodeling project well from the start, you’ll know when you need to bring in a professional to help you minimize errors and maximize results. The bonus of a plumbing expert is they’ll be able to spot additional problems like mold growth or ventilation issues.

Some people prefer to take on all of the work themselves, but it’s important to know when a plumbing repair, fixture or appliance installation is outside of your skill range. It’s possible you’re stuck in the middle of the project and need pipes re-routed or you realize plumbing lines aren’t positioned properly for your new fixtures.
